Artist | Student | Digital Art

My full name is Alexa Renée Smothers, or Dok, and I'm a freelance illustrator and writer.
My major influences come from the comic books I have read since late childhood (featuring artists Todd McFarlane, Angel Medina, and Brian Bolland, mostly). Their line-art and compositions entranced me. Later on, various artists I began to admire such as Egon Schiele, Sergio Toppi and Alan Lee to name a few, started to throw in their inspirational influence, I began delving more into usage of form and texture, playing with my sketches, and so on.
To this day my work more naturally leans (subconsciously) toward these expressive styles. My better work that is produced more quickly has these essences and similarities within them while allowing the detail I, as a struggling perfectionist, obsess over to remain.

Within my work, I like to tell a story even if it isn't sequential. Maybe it's present in little details such as how a character holds themselves, an expression, a reflection. This is something I'm working on developing right now.
Perhaps this hearkens back to the comics that first impacted me or perhaps it's because I enjoy to write as well. Perhaps both.
Perhaps. ;P

Subject matters that prompt and energize me which often rise up in my work will include mythology, paganism, philosophy, nature/nature vs. technology, dystopian society, spirituality, anthropological studies, historical events, etc... and most these elements combine in a gritty, dark, grungy world with a realistic and unlikely hero who rises up to a challenge within and without, confronting the Self and overcoming obstacles.
These themes manifest in both complex and lighter stories within my work.

You're welcome to dive in and browse through my gallery to check them out!

What can I say, you have some lovely work, yourself!

No worries about response-time. I know all too well how the responsibilities of life can be a tad time-consuming. Haha. ;D

Oh, yes. Incredibly beautiful and dangerous, too if given the right circumstance. Love them!

My mate and I nearly encountered one in Abisko, Sweden while alone near the National Park at night.
We were walking back to our Hostel (45 minute walk in the dark of winter O_O) and happened across fresh moose tracks going in our direction.
Never been so excited and scared in all my life. :D
